The world of Google…

May 23rd, 2008  Tagged , ,

I have had a lovely time exploring Google docs this week.  The really excellent thing about it is that I can access my documents anywhere - no need to save onto my USB drive.  I do a bit of moving about at work - mostly in the library, but sometimes in the school office, often at short notice - all I have to do is log on to Google and keep going with what I was doing - very easy!  This is making me have a rethink about how I can change my work patterns to ultimately make life simpler - I’m not saying that using Google Docs has all the answers, but I am certainly going to spend more time having a look!

Whilst visiting Google Docs, I had a play around with Presentation too!  Very easy to use so far and a nice alternative to Powerpoint with all the advantages of easy access as previously mentioned.

I love Google maps - did the pathway between work and home which is not too dramatic as it is not far - only 6km according to Google!

Used Maps last week to help my son get to an interview in the city - switched from map to terrain mode to give him an actual photo image of where he had to go, then printed off the street map for him to take with him so that he could find his way from the station!  How handy! By the way - used Google Docs to write this post!

Flickr - not just a pretty picture!

I have put photos on Flickr for a few years and occasionally this has interesting results.

I was approached by a small Melbourne firm called Studio Latitude a few months ago wanting to use a Waratah picture I had taken at the Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda.  It was all done legally, contracts were signed, the original photo sent etc.

It was lovely to see samples of the finished product arrive in my mail yesterday - I think they are just great!

RSS feeds, Google Reader and iGoogle!

After a little playing around I managed to sort out Google Reader and subscribed to a few library related feeds - Hey Jude, Warrior Librarian, Libraryman, LIS News, Tame the Web and Flickr Blog.  I have been able to put a Google Reader link onto my iGoogle home page, which is my computer home page which makes it easy to have a quick scan to see if there is anything of interest in the blogs.  What I can’t work out is how to link the Google Reader to my blog via the RSS widget - is this what the RSS link is for, I wonder?

Library Thing

Exploring the Library Thing world is going to take some time!  I found it easy to join - the hard part was then deciding what books to put on!  Do I stick to the odd ‘cerebral’ title I read, or do I just cheerfully list everything I read (late at night chicklit books included!)

Decided that if I waited for the classier titles, my Library Thing shelves would be very bare indeed.  So stay tuned for the complete list of what passes through my hands, supplemented by some of the ‘oldies but goodies’ from my shelves.

The first titles I entered were just names that came to mind - not in any order of importance - I hope to improve that time permitting.

I was interested in hearing a podcast by Tim Spalding, the creator of Library Thing and I would recommend it for a general look at how it came about, and some of the features available.

Week #3 Image generating!

Choices, choices choices!  It was amazing to have a look at just a few of the huge number of image generators there are.  A little tricky doing it at school however, as the Spyware warnings and filter rejections popped up fairly frequently.  Just moved on to another when this happened until I found http://www.redkid.net/generator/ which was no problem.  I chose the punk because it reminded me of my many bad hair days!
